As a Nonprofit Director, I

  • lead outreach, engagement, organizing and partnership development efforts for capacity-building in low-income communities,
  • engage local sector partners in data-sharing and lead independent community-based research to track disparities at the neighborhood level
  • design and implement upstream, multi-sector, multi-disciplined approaches to address local disparities.

As a Community Engagement Consultant, I

  • provide consulting guidance to assist institutions in partnering equitably, effectively, and sustainably in vulnerable communities to address chronic disparities (serving health systems, education systems & youth development agencies, criminal justice systems, workforce & small business development initiatives).

As a University Sociology Faculty Member, I

  • (in the classroom) support undergraduate learning in introductory Sociology courses, providing an overview of the science and its foundations, as well as an exploration of general social phenomena, relevant social issues, and an understanding of socio-economic disparities. As a high-level practitioner with ongoing work that intersects into various fields, my students (even non-sociology majors) benefit from current real-world examples of applied sociology in various sectors.
  • (outside the classroom) oversee sociology practicum internships, leveraging my organizational connections to provide pathways to opportunities for experiential learning in various fields, also ensuring that the local community benefits from the on-campus talent pipeline that is otherwise often cut off.
  • serve as Faculty Advisor for the student chapter of the NAACP and the student chapter of the Collegiate 100
  • (in my department) driving “Applied Sociology” to build a stronger arm of Community-Engaged Science to drive local impact, with a dual aim of increasing interdisciplinary partnerships and community partnerships.

As a Community-Engaged Leader, I

  • serve as President of the 100 Black Men of Eastern NC minority male mentoring organization
  • serve on the NC Governor’s State Reentry Council to support local reentry councils across the state in coordinating resources and driving policy change to ensure that citizens returning from incarceration into our local communities have access to resources to support their healthy reentry.
